Terry Hall, The Specials’ vivacious vocalist, died at 63. The band announced Hall’s death on Monday (December 19), citing an undisclosed “brief illness” as the cause of death.

Hall died after a brief illness, and the band announced his death late Monday night. He was one of our country’s most forward-thinking artists and songwriters. Thus we fondly referred to him as “our beloved comrade and brother.”

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing, following a brief illness, of Terry Hall, our beautiful friend, brother, and one of the most brilliant singers, songwriters, and lyricists this country has ever produced, Terry Hall was a wonderful husband and father and one of the kindest, funniest, and most genuine of souls. His music and his performances encapsulated the very essence of life… the joy, the pain, the humor, the fight for justice, but mostly the love.” in a statement by The Specials on the band’s social media pages.

Hall joined The Specials in the late 1970s, during the racial upheaval, economic stagnation, and urban instability of the time. Coventry was a vast urban area in the heart of England’s Midlands.
