Early 2016, LG announced the 14-inch Gramme laptop in the US. The 15.6-inch Gramme followed. Thanks to the latest gramme models, their lightweight design has remained a selling point. The $1,999 LG Gram 15 (15Z980) is the lightest 15.6-inch laptop available….

LG released the 14-inch Gramme laptop in the United States in early 2016, followed by the 15.6-inch Gramme. The selling point of their featherweight construction has continued with the newest Gramme models. We are aware that the LG Gram 15 (15Z980) ($1,999) weighs just 2.41 pounds, making it the lightest 15.6-inch laptop. It is only slightly larger than ordinary 14-inch laptops due to its nearly borderless screen. It possesses the processing capability of a desktop computer (although not the graphics processing power), ample memory and storage, a stunning screen, and a long battery life, which makes it a suitable replacement for a desktop.

We’re so pleased that the LG joins the ranks of our Editors’ Choice products alongside the Dell XPS 15 Touch and the Microsoft Surface Book 2.

I am reviewing the specifications of the LG Gram 15 (15Z980).

Costs and accessibility of LG gram 15 (15Z980)

LG initially announced the LG Gramme SuperSlim for 2023, along with the rest of LG’s Gramme series. It was rebranded as the LG Gramme Ultraslim when it debuted in late April. Now, you can purchase it directly from LG or other retailers such as Amazon and B&H. There is also a non-functional listing on Best Buy.

The LG Gramme SuperSlim, which starts at $1,700, is a laptop with a high price tag that needs to deliver exceptional performance to justify its cost. My system is a high-end configuration, priced at $2,000, featuring 32GB of RAM and a 2TB SSD. It is available in a single shade called Neptune Blue, which is a dark grey colour with a hint of blue that may become more apparent depending on the lighting or your perspective.

Desgin of LG gram 15 (15Z980)

LG has used its magnesium alloy chassis for years, which has made the Gramme series recognized for its lightweight. Magnesium is fantastic because it offers the same durability as aluminium but in a much more manageable profile, being both lightweight and strong. However, magnesium lacks the same solidity as aluminium. Despite passing the MIL-STD-810H test, the Gramme SuperSlim has a plasticky texture and feel. However, it doesn’t feel particularly cheap; rather, it is just average.

Only recently, people have noted that LG’s Gramme laptops were lightweight but not small in profile. The Gramme SuperSlim changes that. LG has created the smallest laptop ever and one of the tiniest laptops overall, measuring just 0.43 inches or under 11mm in thickness (compared to the regular LG Gramme 15, which is 17.5mm thick). The LG Gramme SuperSlim weighs a feathery 2.18 pounds, which makes it one of the lightest 15-inch laptops available. The Gramme 15 has a weight of just 2.51 pounds, which makes it incredibly lightweight for its size.

Keyboard

The LG Gramme SuperSlim needs to improve in one area: the keyboard. I like the keyboards on Lenovo laptops, though they’re pretty decent. This one is pale in comparison. Typing is uncomfortable due to the lack of stiffness and travel in the keys. Over time, I adjusted to it, and it served its intended purpose.

The keyboards on high-end laptops like HP or Lenovo are just better than it. LG also chose to use an almost full-size layout, including a number pad and inverted T-shaped arrow keys. I always appreciate having them on my laptop, given their uncommonness. I prefer the touchpad. The right size and I can easily go across it with my hands. My primary criticism is that there is space all around it.

I have felt it to be a manageable size, but obviously, I always prefer more space. The touchpad is located in the middle of the laptop rather than being positioned to the left or right of the spacebar. Adjusting to the fact that the touchpad on many laptops with numeric keypads is located out to the side in order to align it with the spacebar on the keyboard may take some time. This method is the best.

Display

From the start, LG’s Gram laptops have boasted excellent screens, offering up to 99% DCI-P3 colour gamut coverage. However, the selection introduces OLED to the Gramme SuperSlim, which is a huge plus for the product.

The screen’s Full HD resolution (1920×1080) and rather small 15.6-inch size are one minor letdown. Most users still find Full HD very sharp at this size, but it would have been excellent to have Quad HD as an option, especially considering the high cost of this laptop.

However, you have already impressed us with the current presentation. Since OLED displays are self-emissive, they have individual light sources for each pixel. The screen can create more bright colours and true blacks because it can shut off the light for each pixel on command. I have looked at all the pictures, and they seem amazing, with stunningly vivid colours on this screen.
