This is the first year Oxford Languages has put its annual Word of the Year list up for a public vote. Three winners were selected from a large pool of candidates by a team of lexicographers: Metaverse, #IStandWith, and Goblin mode. Almost 300,000 native English speakers have voted online in the last two weeks to choose the Word of the Year.

With almost 340,000 votes cast, “goblin mode” received 93% of the vote and “metaverse” received 4%. The hashtag “IStandWith” came in at number three.

“New words catch on when they capture our imagination or fill a hole with a phrase for a notion we need to express,” said Oxford Languages product director Katherine Connor Martin in a phone interview with The New York Times. Further, she remarked, “Goblin mode” conveyed the impression that the pandemic is finished, but we’re still dealing with it. “Do we want pre-pandemic respectability again?”

We also witnessed people entering “goblin mode” during the lockdown period. We spent much of our time alone or with our families, trapped indoors, which triggered “goblin mode” in many of us. It’s not that I’ve never felt this way before.
